Wonderful piece, Linda, told very well.

Just yesterday I was listening to the Hidden Brain podcast, on the topic of "quitting", or taking the leap into the unknown. The episode talked about how people don't factor in the concept of an opportunity cost. What are we forgoing by continuing to do "X"?

I suddenly realized that when I decided to retire last year, it was because I DID think about the opportunity cost of continuing to work.

I had a really good job (decent employer, great manager, highest salary of 40 years of working) but I also knew the family genetic history and how many of my mother's traits I'd inherited. I figured I had maybe 10 good health years left, and I wanted to enjoy them being retired and doing my arts and crafts hobbies. Yes, I am fortunate to be in the position to retire, not having had children to raise and support, and being able to put money away. I realize not everyone can do what I did. But I am really enjoying having my own time to do as I wish.
