This year I was finally able to shift the workflow for one of the products I worked on to start with user flows and screenflow diagrams, which the whole product team, including product manager and developers, would discuss and ask questions. Only then would I shift to designing screen mockups and documenting flows and states. Everyone loved the shift, as it meant that engineering time wasn't wasted having to redo work because the visual designs hadn't accounted for flows and states.
