This just sparked a memory: I went back to college at 38 to study graphic design to make a career change. One class, the instructor spent most of his time discussing his therapy sessions, and he was both openly gay and openly favored the male students. My work was either ignored or cruelly castigated.

I dropped the class and filed a lengthy complaint, knowing he was up for tenure and the tenure committee would be taking into consideration any student feedback.

I argued that I was not receiving instruction, and that's what my tuition paid for. In what may be a first in higher ed, I actually got a refund. Turns out another student, a young man, also complained about the instructor's obvious favoritism toward the men in the class.
