The only reason I regret selling my townhouse condo in 1995 to go back to school in another city is that by now, I would have paid off the mortgage, and the resale price would not be double what I paid for it. That would give me more freedom to move to a pricey retirement community. Instead, I will be paying rent for the rest of my (now retired) life. The nicest places in my current location are beyond my budget. Even in smaller cities, rents have gotten very high.

What I laugh at is everyone telling you owning a home is the only way to build generational wealth. First, I don't have children. Second, if you have more than one kid, and you die before your home is paid for (or even if it is), not sure how that's building generational wealth. I guess the kids could sell the house and split the proceeds. My brother and I inherited about $40,000 each from the sale of the childhood home, hardly an amount called "wealth."
