Outpatient clinics also require this now. Ask them to explain how a random friend's presence in a waiting room is accomplishing anything and you get a blank stare.

Ten years ago, a friend was allowed to drop me off and then come pick me up after the nurse texted her that I was ready to leave after a colonoscopy. Now, not only do I have to find someone who can give me a ride, but also sit around during the procedure.

Single, childless, and with my closest friends living 2 hours away or who don't drive means no procedure. How is THAT good medical care? Talk about throwing out the baby with the bath water.
