Our views are shaped by the organizations in which we have worked. Yes, playing in an app is the best way to learn your way around, but when you have to hit the ground running in a new organization with a new product manager to boot, having collated screens and an overview of the product is a necessity. It took me about a week to compile the screens, and my replacement is the better for it.

With one UX designer for two completely different websites, with teams of developers, there's not an option to just focus on one area of the website platform. You would be holding up an entire engineering team.
