On a much smaller scale, I've noticed the same trend. This year, I am getting a couple of dozen new followers a month. I am writing more than last year, and commenting more. And yet not one of my stories has come anywhere near to the payments I received last year. I'm guessing that Medium has tweaked its algorithm to lessen the payouts to writers.
