My parents were born in the late 1920s. Dad was a steelworker, Mom a waitress. Besides being frugal, they always saved up to buy a high quality durable item, not a cheap version that wouldn't last. They didn't have a credit card until the 1980s or later. Though Sears had a Lay-a-away program for Christmas gifts.
