My Mom died in her sleep in 2001; Dad in the ICU in 2010. Even now there are mornings when I wake up and it hits me again that I'm an adult orphan. Someone will say something to me, and I'll think, why didn't I ever ask my parents about that? It was many years before I got over the tiny impulse to pick up the phone to call either one of them.
