My first job as a designer after changing careers was at a tiny design studio in DC in 1997. The design team consisted of me, “Kathy,” and “Robert.”

The studio head, “Michael,” had an annoying flaw: He assumed that only men understood computers. In actuality, I was extremely Mac savvy.

April 1 loomed; Kathy and I schemed. When Michael was away for lunch, I’d awaken his Mac, take a screenshot of his desktop, flip it, and set it as his screensaver. Kathy and I bet that once he saw it, he’d come running to Robert to fix it. The only suspense was how long it would take.

About 30 seconds.

“Robert, there’s something wrong with my computer.”

Me: 2. Sexist stereotypes: 0.
