Interestingly enough, this fear also is prominent at certain specific ages in kids. I once worked on vocabulary learning games for kids. When we did some moderated usability testing, we found that at certain ages, kids don't want to make a mistake; at other ages, they will push or tap on anything and just see what happens. We had to add a feature for the former group to have a character pop up to encourage them to try things if there was no activity for a certain period of time.
