Interesting piece. I agree personas have some role to play, but as you point out, they aren't terribly helpful in making product design decisions.

I wonder if a combination of your Anchored Mental Models and a Jobs-to-be-done approach might work? JTBD is very much situational/contextual. What you call Transient Mental Models seem to me closer to the JTBD perspective.
