I live in a walkable location, it's what keeps me here, in spite of ever increasing rent. I'm single and childless, so I have to depend on me, myself, and I. In considering moving elsewhere, besides budget, I have to be in a place where I don't have to depend on a car to get groceries. I'm not financially in a position to pay for having everything delivered.
The cold reality in most of the United States is that the truly walkable locations are for those in the upper echelons of income. The people who most need walkability or good transit are priced out. And smaller cities, especially in the South, have poor to no public transit.
