I live in a very walkable city in Northern Va., which I will have to leave in order to be able to retire and not be reduced to rice, beans, and a library card for my entire existence. The people who most need to be able to walk to work—retail workers, low-wage workers—are least able to afford living in a walkable location. To add insult to injury, they then get blamed by the 1% in their million dollar homes for driving to work because public transit doesn't extend out to the outer cheap burbs.
