I know me and I'm not cut out for retail jobs. When I came back to the DC area after going back to college to study graphic design in my late 30s, I needed to supplement the income I was making at an entry level design job. I took a part time job at Barnes and Noble, setting up their new store. The problem I had with them is that while they would tell you it was part time and would conform to your hours, they would always try to extend your hours to suit them. I was not allowed to sit on a stool at the register despite a documented spine issue. After the store actually opened and a month of having to work more hours than I wanted, I quit. Told my manager I couldn't be standing at the register for extended periods. Then he offered to accommodate me. Too late.

The little experience I've had in retail jobs went pretty much like this. I am simply not suited to deal with petty micromanagers and stupidity. Or concrete floors. And I have a lot of enjoyable activities every week that I devote time to and any part time employer would have to work around them. That's not realistic, obviously. I retired so I could make my own schedule every day.

If you are over 50 and trying to get a job in a white collar role, especially anything tech related, good luck. Part-time? Forget about it. Folks I know in that situation set themselves up as consultants.

My 25 cents.
