I have noticed the same phenomenon in my retired life. I wrote a piece a year or so ago about what one sociologist called the strength of weak ties, sparked by a genuine albeit brief connection I made with an X-ray tech over the subject of women's basketball.

To see someone light up because you interacted with them as a fellow human being and not just a "service provider" is so rewarding it almost seems selfish.
