I have a similar story, but without kids, it's meant I have a substantial retirement nest egg. Even after a year of unemployment in my 60s. And when I do buy something new these days, even a choice considered low end by most (like a budget Android smartphone instead of an iphone to replace a flip phone) is a step up by comparison for me. Living below one's means lowers the expectations bar a lot.
