Like millions of others, I watched a lot of college basketball over the past month of “March Madness.” I saw some things that I remembered learning not to do 50 years ago in my freshman year of high school, playing on the girls’ junior varsity team.

It got me thinking about the principles I had drilled into me and their application to succeeding at work and in life. By drilled into me, I mean being made to run laps for violating.

Hoops lessons

Basketball: Don’t leave your feet to make a pass unless you have eye contact with a teammate.

Life: Learn the difference between calculated risk and recklessness.

Basketball: Don’t run down court with your back to the ball. Be ready to receive a pass.

Work: Things run a lot more smoothly if you are ready to collaborate.

Basketball: Your opponent’s hips don’t lie. They will tell you where their body is heading.

Life: When someone tells you who they are by their actions, believe them.

Basketball: Never pass through the key under the opponent’s basket, no matter how tempting.
