An even worse example of the problem of not training managers is putting professors in charge of professional staff, which is what happened to me at George Mason University. All the professional staff, with years of work experience and expertise in their field, were treated like glorified grad students taking orders. It frosted my ass that a micromanager professor at a regional university lorded over me, with a doctorate from Cornell and award-winning experience in both journalism and design. My need to eat and pay rent forced me to put up with it until I escaped to an edtech start-up where my expertise was actually valued.
