All the developers I've worked with were remote, including in Europe. At my last job, the social media folks all sat together, but in their own cubicles in a "pod". The non-marketing designers, including me, sat in cubicles in a pod.

The actual product teams I worked with were dispersed over 3 separate floors.

I don't see any value of having designers all sharing a large table. Some of us, like me, are left-handed. And/or have physical disabilities requiring accommodations for desk and chair set ups.

Plus, it's very hard to do design in a vast open space with noise, conversations, harsh lighting. Just not conducive to quality work. Design doesn't typically involve talking with others until presenting work.
